CNCN Opposes House Redistricting Maps for Northern Pinellas County
Wednesday, 28 December 2011 14:55
The 33,000 residents of East Lake Florida object to the lines drawn for the new Florida House District 64 and 65 and have drafted a resolution requesting the Florida House of Representatives Redistricting Committee to reconsider the splitting up of community of 33,000 residents into two different districts that are served by representatives in two different counties in the Tampa Bay area. Currently the East Lake Tarpon Community resides completely within District 48.
The proposed districts 64 and 65 split the East Lake Community into two halves diluting their representation. Although the East Lake community of 33,000 residents resides in un-incorporated area of Pinellas County the residents are cohesive community and represented by the nonprofit organization Council of North County Neighborhoods (CNCN) and the Pinellas Board of County Commissioners. There is pending legislation this session (HB699 / SB1892) to further define the community and prevent undesired involuntary annexation. In addition the Pinellas County Commission will be reviewing a Community Overlay January 24, 2012 to further define the quality of life standards and land use desires of these 33,000 residents of un-incorporated Pinellas County.
In summary East Lake Tarpon area is not a city but functions as a cohesive group of 33,000 residents and do not want to be split into two separate districts. Their request to the Florida Legislature would be to move the redistricting lines to the west (middle of Lake Tarpon) or to the east (Hillsborough County Line) and north (Pasco County Line) to keep the community whole and represented by a single representative.
Keep the East Lake Tarpon’s 33,000 residents in one district.
